The Handbook of Bird Biology is a thorough, comprehensive coverage of topics in the origins, taxonomy, anatomy, behavior, plumage, migrations, and distribution of birds, including the latest evidence from the fossil record and molecular genetics to inform avian systematics and the sometimes surprising relationships among groups of bird families and species.

Though I’m not an ornithologist, I’m fascinated by the depth and clarity of this comprehensive textbook. It is beautifully illustrated with full color photos, drawings and graphs. The organization takes the reader on a step by step exploration of every aspect of bird biology in all parts of our world.

Excellent photos, diagrams and illustrations, glossary, index, web links, and clear writing. If you’re ready to tackle in in-depth study of birds, look no further. But be advise: think text book – this is not, per se, a handbook.

Although it’s written for bird enthusiasts, a high school graduate or junior college reading level is required. In fact, some colleges have adopted previous versions of this book for its introductory course in ornithology, and this new edition is destined to become the authoritative resource for the first- or second-year college student!

This is an absolutely fantastic book! There is a ton of information in its 650+ pages. Gorgeous illustrations, detailed charts, extremely clear and well-written, I am impressed. An understanding of ornithology is a great way to enter the wider field of biology, ecology, and ultimately the place of humans in the universe. Birders should get this book. Politicians should too.
